I am excited to announce the start of the SIBO Testing and Treatment Clinic in the greater Vancouver area. Please visit our new website, like us on facebook or follow us on twitter. Our mission, as always, is to provide “great health through good digestion” and my goal is to be the most comprehensive clinical source of information for testing and treatment of SIBO in North America.

Once again, SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and has clinical significance in a host of health conditions outlined below.

Westcoast Integrative Health was the first private clinic in Canada to offer client direct SIBO testing using Quintrons Microlyzer DP, which measures both methane and hydrogen breath samples. The concern with offering testing to large amounts of people was the practicality of the testing, which required an in-office collection procedure which took 3 to 5 hours! This was not something that a lot of people where willing, nor able to do.

The newly created SIBO Testing and Treatment Clinic is now equipt with the latest technology in hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide breath testing, the Quintron BreathTracker SC. This equipment allows for breath samples to be collected in the comfort of your own home following a comprehensive preparation diet and lactulose (or other sugar substrate) challenge. The test is completely non-invasive and is invaluable in the management and treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Our equipment tells us a lot about what is going on in places of the gut that previously have been difficult or inconvenient to assess. This information includes gastrointestinal transit time or how long it takes the gut to move food from one end to the other. More importantly hydrogen and methane breath testing measures where (and provides some data on how much) bacteria are in the small intestine which lead to the signs and symptoms related to SIBO.

As research in this area continues at a phenomenal pace, the of conditions and symptoms list will continue to grow, but at present SIBO has a clinical or researched connection to the following signs and symptoms.
