This Canada Day marks a major milestone for me … today is the day that marks the end of my 6 month vegan experiment. I had my blood testing done on Saturday morning to evaluate the outcome and the lab results are already in…

All I can say is …. unbelievable! I suppose I anticipated an objective improvement but would never have expected such a significative response considering my susceptibility to high cholesterol.

I made a point, during the last 6 months, not to change too many variables in my life. I have mostly controlled for my exercise and supplement regime. The only thing that really changed, was the complete elimination of dairy, eggs, fish, chicken and all other meat products.

As a result of these changes my cholesterol readings have dropped by 23 percent. My exercise tolerance has also gone up significantly. Further, I feel that my appetite has decreased quite a lot and I have been able to control my blood sugar very well throughout the day with very few calories. I have mostly been surviving on a combination of raw and roasted nuts!

The negative changes I experience in relation to this diet include: a significant reduction in my muscle mass, and an increased consumption of starchy carbohydrates. It’s almost impossible to avoid grains while on a vegan diet!

I believe that the results of this experiment are significant and I am very happy with the outcome. It seems that my metabolism does a lot better on starchy carbohydrate restriction, so moving forward I believe that a hybridization of the paleo and vegan diets are ideal for me.

I’m looking forward to trying the ketogenic diet, which is a very strict version of this hybridization. The ketogenic diet will restrict starch and fruits but also excessive meat consumption. Essentially the diet will revolve around plenty of vegetables and fat, with limited meat and dairy. This diet is essentially Westcoast Integrative Health’s official cancer diet, and I’m looking forward to seeing how hard it is to adhere to.

Now that I can track my progress through objectifying my results and comparing them over time, I’m looking forward to seeing what the future brings! Have a look at my reports, here.

Remember there’s no “can’t” in Canada.
